The Smell of Death, the Corpse Flower is Soon to Bloom

Corpse FlowerThe Corpse Flower – technically known as Titan Arum – as the name indicates has one of the most putrid smells among flowers. This flower blooms about every 15 years only, and it is about to bloom at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. It gives off a scent that is quite similar to the smell of flesh rotting and even been moved to a special room to prevent the smell from spreading through the conservatory.

Spokeswoman Michelle Furrer says, “It will bloom within the next seven days, and then it will bloom for two days.”

Last year at Gustavus Adolphus College, a corpse flower bloomed for the first time in the history of Minnesota. This plant was first discovered in the 1800s, and since then only 122 flowers of this kind have bloomed.

The corpse flower that is now at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory was acquired from the Gustavus College three years ago. This flower is fairly small specimen among corpse flowers, weighing in at about 25 pounds.
