Protests to Save Flower Shop
This week Whole Foods Market decided not to renew the lease of a beloved flower shop in Berkley, California. Residents of the city met this decision with protest.
The owners of Ashby Flowers and about 50 regular customers gather outside the shop to demonstrate, and to fight for the renewal of the shop’s lease.
The lease was not renewed because the owner’s of the market felt that the space would be better used as a convenient food service location.
Michael Howard, a Berkley Whole Foods Employee said, “One of the options we are currently looking at is something with a local juice bar kind of a spot, a walk-up convenient to-go spot.”
The flower shop has been in business for nearly 50 years, the only compensation being offered is that the Market will help them find a new location.
Marcy Simon, one of the owners of the shop hopes that through negotiation they will be able to stay at this spot. She says, “We don’t have any plans to open another location. We have a plan to win this.”
