Long-Lasting Flowers

Long-Lasting Flowers“Will flower until frost,” are the four words any gardener is happy to hear during the last few days of summer. A plant that braves storms, torrential rain, insect attacks, short days, low light levels and still manages to produce beautiful colours for fall is the gardener’s dream.

Of course, summer flowers interspersed with colourful fall leaves and berries is a combination that can win the hearts of many. However, there are many perennials, shrubs and climbers that can provide colour and beauty through September, October and sometimes even the first few weeks of November.

The dahlia is the star among the hardy flowers of fall — it is a colourful perennial that is renowned for its toughness. This flower would not paint the most beautiful picture in a spring garden but it’s just what an avid gardener is looking for during the fall.

Abutilons, argyranthemums, cannas, fuchsias, gazanias, osteospermums, pelargoniums and salvias should also be considered as they can provide just as much colour. Salvias have a lot of value as they grow to a height of 3 feet, and they give a more natural look to a fall garden…
