Regal red

Red is one of the key colours of Christmas – the colour of Santa’s coat, winter berries, Christmas baubles and Rudolph’s nose. It’s also the colour of the UK’s favourite flowers for the season – roses, amaryllis and poinsettia. Poinsettia is a plant originally from Mexico that has become synonymous with Christmas in the UK – some people even choose to have Christmas flowers like this instead of a Christmas tree. A poinsettia plant makes a wonderful Christmas gift and addition to a fireplace or coffee table. There are many varieties and colours of amaryllis – a plant originally from South Africa – but the favourite for Christmas is the red variety. These again make beautiful Christmas presents, and amaryllis paired with hypericum berries makes for a stunning arrangement. For tradition and elegance it has to be roses – and red roses circling a white candle makes a perfect centrepiece for a Christmas party.

Green glory of nature’s bounty

Green is one of the key colours of the season – with evergreen plants and trees playing central roles in decorations and iconic winter landscapes. Think Christmas trees, firs in the snow, holly bushes and ivy.  Many people choose to bring beautiful scents into their homes with pine branches: arrange on your mantle piece and decorate with baubles, bells and bows. Christmas wreaths of pine are also a wonderful addition to your front door, and other greenery like ivy, holly and fragrant herbs like rosemary can also be incorporated. Pine makes for beautiful additions to Christmas flowers – such as silvery fir branches and rich red tulips. Eucalyptus adds a silvery green shade to winter arrangements.

Dreaming of a white Christmas

White flowers create a look of purity, simplicity and elegance and perfectly evoke the frost and snow of the season. They will look especially beautiful juxtaposed with the rich colours of traditional Christmas decorations, adding a light lift and bright contrast to reds, greens and golds. White tulips make a wonderful Christmas gift or can be displayed as a table centrepiece for parties. Lilies are also a classic and elegant choice – creating a truly stunning display for reception rooms in the house or for a special gift. White roses, amaryllis and hydrangeas are other options for white Christmas flowers. Display on their own or pair with contrasting red berries or flower for striking displays. Silver and gold branches can also be added to create a winter wonderland theme.
