Bel Air Full of Lotuses
The Lotus festival in Echo Park did not see many lotuses this year as they bloomed poorly in that area. However, in the Hannah Carter Japanese Garden is seeing an abundance of the aquatic flower. This garden is a part of UCLA, and entrance can only be gained by appointment.
Most people will recognize a lotus flower with its large pink petals and giant green leaves. They are religiously significant for Buddhists. Indian or Chinese lotus is producing the most blooms this year and will continue to bloom until the middle of august with most of the flowers growing up to 5 feet in height.
Water lilies are also growing in abundance in the garden. Ancient Egyptians revered this flower as well as the famous French Impressionist painter Claude Monet, who painted nearly 250 paintings of the flower. This garden has a particular variety called Gerardiana which is really fragrant – it is blooming in abundance thought a little later than usual.
