The week before a Punjabi wedding sees the first official ceremony. Shagun marks the commencement of festivities. Gifts are exchanged by the two families to confirm the engagement.

Sikh Marriage The bride receives red and white bracelets from her mother's brother and her aunt. Light ornaments of beaten silver and gold called kalira are tied to the bangles.

On the wedding day there is a procession "the baraat " where the groom's friends and family make their way to the bride's house. When they arrive there is a feast. In the late hours of the evening the actual wedding ceremony commences. Here the bridal couple sit in front of the Granth Sahib. The ardas are read, and the 10 Sikh gurus are saluted.

The last ceremony is the doli, where the bride leaves with the groom  not before she throws a handful of rice over her shoulders.
