Missed Christmas? Or perhaps you do not celebrate on December 25th? Gifts and flowers should still be part of everyone's festive season. One way to pay back all the hospitality and join in is to send New Year flowers to celebrate the start of the new year. We can deliver your flowers on the day of order in London, and next day throughout the UK.

It is a long part of historical tradition to celebrate the return of the sun and the brighter days after the darkness of the winter solstice,  welcoming in the New Year and to wish your friends and colleagues good luck for the coming year. It is celebrated in many cultures around the world.

In Scotland the celebration is known as Hogmanay and it is the custom to hold a party in the home over the time of the midnight bells welcoming the new year. Traditionally the party should be open to all comers and hospitality issued to anyone who asks. The first visitor to set their foot over the threshold after midnight is known as the "First Foot" and brings to ensure good things in the coming year. Ideally it is best if they are tall and dark, and they should bring gifts of coal, for warmth, black bun or shortbread, to signify plenty to eat, and a bottle of whisky to symbolise drink and friendships. There is no need to carry more than a small lump of coal: a sackload is not expected. A gift of seasonal flowers to brighten the home could be added. This, preferably male, visitor should be tall and dark as the invading Vikings were blond and shorter and thus they could be easily identified as a friend.

In Japan and China, New Year is the season for celebration with fireworks and ritual cleansing of the old year's troubles to make way for the new. The fireworks at the turn of the year are to dispel any evil spirits who will be scared away by the explosions and flashes. Gifts of lucky money are given in special New Year red envelopes to bring good luck.

A common thread in both these traditions is the giving of New Year gifts, and New Year flowers could become part of that tradition,  bringing a touch of colour at a dark time of year to the newly spring cleaned home. New seasons tulips  and amaryllis are available at this time of year, or you could choose a bright mixed vase arrangement.  Order New Year flowers and New Year gifts online from our London florist for same day delivery in London and next day delivery throughout the UK.
