St. Valentine's Day is celebrated across the world on February 14th. It's a holiday where plants, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones. Emotive occasions are incredibly important in peoples lives. On Valentine's Day, flowers are traditionally delivered to remind those special people just how much you care for them. As a florist, we love sending out flowers for this occasion because we get to make people across the UK smile, jump for joy and sometimes cry in happiness. It's just something we find deeply rewarding!
But where did the tradition of Valentine's Day come from? Why is Valentine's Day an important occasion? St Valentine has been an enigma for centuries. The only knowledge we have is that it derives from both Christian and Roman tradition. According to the Catholic Church, there are three recognised saints named Valentine.
Of all three legends, we have one we like the most. It goes like this: Valentine was a young man who fell in love with a young girl whilst he was imprisoned. It is thought that this girl took care of Valentine while he was was locked up. He wrote her letters, each which he signed 'From your Valentine', a phrase still in use today. While the truth behind the story is unknown, his characteristics stood through the test of time. His sympathetic, heroic and romantic attitude won him the place of one of the most popular saints of all time.
The first Valentine note still in existence today is a poem that was written by Charles, Duke of Orleans, while he was imprisoned in our very own Tower of London. Written in 1415, it now is a proud part of the manuscript collection at the British Library in London. Despite this, Valentine's day wasn't widely celebrated until the 17th century and by the 18th century, people across all social classes began exchanging gifts and notes with their loved ones.
Technology really helped Valentine's Day boom. The birth of mass printing, improvements in postal charges and an ever increasing disposable income allowed for Esther A Howland (also known as the 'Mother of the Valentine') in 1840 to begin selling the first mass-produced Valentine's Day cards.
The internet then allowed florists and gift retailers like us to set up an online florist and gift shops. People from all across the world use our service to help remind and show their loved ones in London and the UK just how much they are cared for. So what are you waiting for? Let them know just how much they're loved, by sending flowers, plants and gifts created with love. Our selection is vast: there is an item here for everyone. Each of our bouquets is hand-made by our expert team of florists and is hand-delivered in London or couriered to the rest of the UK.
