The way to amaryllis

Posted on January 31, 2008 with 4 Comments

The amaryllis is an unusual flower. With large multiple heads on one stem, it comes into bloom from about Christmas time through to early spring. From a slender bud large blossoms unfurl into beautiful trumpet shaped blooms in jewel-like colours. The name derives from the Greek ‘amarysso’ to shine or sparkle, apparantly a reference to the reflective quality of the petals when viewed in strong light.

Amaryllis comes in white, pink, a deep dark red velvet colour and even in pink and white stripes!

We at Flowers24Hours have several products including a handtied bouquet,
and also a vase arrangement.

Originally from the mountains of Chile, Amaryllis repay good care. Recut stems and hydrate in citric acid solution.

My Amaryllis has four blossoms on its stem and it looks as if it will send up at least two more stems. And I am really bad at keeping plants so this one is a real bonus!

I would like to know what we should do with our amaryllis bulb when it has finished flowering. We were given it as a Christmas present and it was truly spectacular.
I have heard that if I treat it in the right way it could flower again next year. Could you tell me what to do, please?

The amaryllis is from the mountains of Chile so we need to recreate South American conditions. Remove the dead leaves and flowers, let it dry out, wrap in paper and keep dry until you repot it next summer. Keep it in the dark until strong shoots appear. Then your bulb will flower again.
