The amaryllis is an unusual flower. With large multiple heads on one stem, it comes into bloom from about Christmas time through to early spring. From a slender bud large blossoms unfurl into beautiful trumpet shaped blooms in jewel-like colours. The name derives from the Greek ‘amarysso’ to shine or sparkle, apparantly a reference to the reflective quality of the petals when viewed in strong light.
Amaryllis comes in white, pink, a deep dark red velvet colour and even in pink and white stripes!
